Good Intentions, Unexpected Outcomes: How Embracing Change Leads to Growth
In April 2015, Nepal was struck by a massive earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, which claimed nearly 9,000 lives and injured more than 22,000 individuals. This disaster not only revealed the fragility of human life but also the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Hearing about the struggles the Nepalese people were still facing after a year, I traveled to Nepal early 2016 to volunteer as an earthquake relief helper.
This time in Nepal was a profound lesson in the importance of connection, giving back, and understanding the struggles and inequalities on a global scale. Contributing to rebuilding efforts and working in the construction of schools and homes, I noticed the pervasive issue of pollution, even in the most remote mountain areas. A problem that seemed insurmountable (and ,to be honest, a questionable priority) against the backdrop of the earthquake’s aftermath.
Driven by an impulse and determined to make a difference, I initiated an environmental project that began with local trash collection efforts and educational sessions in small schools. Despite facing skepticism and numerous challenges, what started as a small-scale initiative to combat pollution evolved into an innovative venture: sketches and ideas for a simple recycling machine. This concept, initially dismissed by some, caught the attention of engineers and academics at TU Berlin, where it was further developed and refined.
Why am I telling you this and what is the main take-away from this project?
The journey of this invention is a testament to the unpredictability of impact. Initially designed to tackle the plastic waste problem in Nepal, the machine’s technology was later adapted for cutting small compostable material in West Africa.
Missed the mark vs. Opportunity unlocked
This evolution underscores a fascinating reality: ideas born from a clear goal and intention in one part of the world can find new, unexpected applications elsewhere.
This experience serves as a powerful lesson in the ripple effects of good intentions. Efforts made with a genuine desire to help and improve the world, however small or localized, can have far-reaching positive outcomes, sometimes in ways that were never anticipated. It highlights the importance of being a driving force with a clear vision, yet also possessing the flexibility to go with the flow and accept that some outcomes are simply stepping stones to different and sometimes greater opportunities.
The same of course goes for personal development and your own AHA moments!
Acting on the impulse to improve and effect change is always worthwhile and this story to me will always be a reminder that every thread of effort weaves into a larger picture of faith, resilience, and interconnectedness.
